Hats: The Fashion Statement for a Woman

Since time immemorial, we have known women to love and appreciate one fashion accessory, the hat. The hat has evolved through the ages and has become more fashionable as it has come along. Women all over the world used to and still do wear headgears, from turbans to bonnets to the velvet hat, to the three story hat to cloches to different variant of a straw hat to the cocktail hat and many more. The hat has always been a huge favourite with women.

Women wore hats for various reasons. The peasant girls were always seen wearing wide brimmed hats as they worked in the fields under the blazing sun. The first reason why women wear hats is to protect their delicate skin.

Women have more delicate skin than men. Therefore, it is absolutely essential for them to shade their faces, necks and shoulders from the harsh rays of the sun. This is predominantly why women wore and continue to wear hats more than men. Different kinds of fashionable women's hats were designed for women from various strata of society. When women used to venture out to work or to enjoy the company of others, this is one fashion accessory they would don. These hats were made of various materials:

  • Cotton

  • Satin

  • Linen

  • Straw

  • Velvet

  • Wool

  • Silk

  • A woman’s crowning glory is her hair. Her locks are of great value to her. However, a woman might lose hair in some diseases which might result in bald patches. The second reason why women wear hats is to cover bald patches. Bald patches on a woman’s crown are certainly an eyesore. To camouflage this flaw a woman wears a hat, well co-ordinated with her outfit. The hat covers her flaw well and in the process also adds to her beauty.

As mentioned earlier, for a woman, her hair is an asset. However, at times, the hair might not be styled as per choice. The third reason why women wear hats is cover unruly hair. The hat looks beautiful and classy on a woman’s head. The hat also enhances a woman’s beauty. As the hat is a fashion statement, influential and well known women all over the world wear them not just to protect their skin or cover bald spots or camouflage unruly hair but hats are worn for style. These headgears have evolved not only in appearance but also in use.
